Earlier this month, students from Gorton Mount Primary Academy had the fantastic opportunity to attend the National Squash Championships at the Etihad Campus in Manchester. The youngsters witnessed a fantastic display of squash – with some of the best players in the world showcasing their skills.
DMSF Programme and Volunteer Coordinator, Rebekah Wilson, told us more: “We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was a great success. The youngsters were able to watch the pro-players progress through the qualifying rounds to make the finals and the overall consensus by our girls was, the female players were much better – our boys obviously didn’t agree!
“The pupils were excited to go on an autograph hunt – and all enjoyed searching for the players they’d learnt about on the run up to the championships. They’d also created posters prior to the day which were displayed on the main stand for both players and supporters to see – they loved that!
“All the children got the chance to be coached by squash players in a mini taster session which was thoroughly enjoyed – in fact they’re still talking about it now! It’s just brilliant to be able to raise their aspirations by introducing them to venues, experiences and opportunities that they wouldn’t ordinarily have. We learn, we have fun and you can see that we’re opening their minds to so many possibilities” –
